Description of the project

By the connection of the historical city railway with a new north-south tunnel the new main station of Berlin (Lehrter Bahnhof) - the most modern crossroad railway station in Europe - is under construction. The final completation of the billion Euro project has - as expected - taken place in the end of May 2006, a few days before the opening of the FIFA World Championship. The subterranean traffic juction contains the city railway, the long-distance and regional trains, a subway line and a four-lane road tunnel as well as a parking garage for 900 cars. A glass hall with a length of 321 meters encloses the platforms.
As an outstanding architectural feature the railway station has two twelve-storied binder constructions which enclose the strung-out roof of the hall. The binder constructions were built vertically in the height and then were turned onto the horizontal level. The arched glass roof in between canopies the arrival hall with about 15,000 square meters shopping area on three levels.
